Pastor José Alves da Silva Bittencourt - biography

He was born in 1924 april 20th in Santo Antônio do Manhuaçu City (but was registered in Ipanema City), the state of Minas Gerais. His family was Catholic and he was a member of the catechism group when they met the gospel through some Presbyterians brothers which went to a Baptist church. After a while going to the Sunday School he came back to his catechism class and became part of the Vicentians music band. He liked to play football (soccer) and started to attend balls with his colleges mates. Studying the Commandments he realized that in the Catholic catechism one of the commandments was missing in relation to the Bible. He asked the priest and his godfather. There was no satisfactory answer. The Catholic Church icons' matter became to worry him. He came back to check in his own Bible and finally convinced himself that he should come back to the Sunday School at the Ipanema’s Baptist Church. He read the New Testament and was impressed about the book of John’s Revelations. Finally he accepted Christ and was baptized in the Ipanema river in 1940 February 25th by the pastor Josino Pires Gonçalves.

Showing great potencial in church, soon he went study at the American School, in Vitoria City after that, he went to the Mineiro Baptist School in Belo Horizonte City. Called to duty in the Brazilian Army, he went to Rio de Janeiro and became a student at the Rio’s Baptist School. His calling was clear and as soon he finished his HighSchool he went to the South Brazil’s Theological Seminary in Rio de Janeiro.

His ordination was in 1950 February, and he started as pastor at the Divinopolis First Baptist Church, MG. This ministry improved his knowledge in ministry experience mainly by his relationship with the experienced pastor Cockell. With Cockell he learned the English Language by practicing, enough to be able to communicate and become a registered English Teacher through the CADS* test. He was already a good Latin student and started to be more interested in the Greek Language. He turned to read the New Testament only in its original language. He rig himself at the fundamental text’s exegesis to understand the Holy Spirit doctrine. He read his Greek New Testament several times. In 1960 September, he became the Executive Junta of the Minas Gerais Baptist Convention's  Auxiliary Executive Secretary. He showed great maturity, working side by side with Stover, Lunsford, Ruy Franco and Jack Young with no difficulty. Methodic man, highly struggling, with outstanding discipline, fast thinker and most organized person, he made much for the planning and organization of the missionary field.

His work was discrete, never insinuating any intensions to became senior. In 1967, Jack Young went on vacations and when he came back did not wanted to reassume the Executive chair, so Bittencourt became the chairman secretary. From 1960 to 1970 que prepared the next decade action plan. This strategy the PLANIME, Missionary and Evangelistic Integrated Plan, became one of the most important churches’ growing factors in all Minas Gerais’ State. The number of churches started to almost get doubled each decade and the financial independence project was reached to the point of zero dependence of outside's budget money.

In this plan, churches and institutions became reinforced as others started to merge such as the Mineiro Baptist Seminary. Its need was felt for some time, but the PLANIME reinforce the sense of urgency in creating such an institution to help churches with skilled workmen, with a proper learning placed in harmony and loyalty to the Bible doctrine.

Bittencourt has been a skillful lieder in finding solutions to every problem in the field, a loyal friend of pastors and churches, capable in his spetiality in what dedicated himself as Principal and Professor at the Seminary, always counting with the help of his dedicated wife Dona Maria Dutra Gonçalves Bittencourt.

He was the great defensor of the Mineira Baptist Convention at the most difficult times, fighting against the Charismatic division. He sacrifice himself for the cause, even risking his own wear and the Convention trust and unity. He was the most combative protector of the doctrine against charismatic tendencies. He introduce the system, the planning, the division of labor, the enterprise view in managing the Convention Business.
